IF: detective wip

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I don’t think I’m done with this yet, so I haven’t posted it to the IF site. I think it needs a frame or something. Something. HB pencil on paper and digital color. Waiting till tomorrow to see what I think of it then. Been busy around here with other things having been gone most of the weekend – drawing but nothing much and haven’t gotten to scan anything anyway.

I couldn’t quite bear to draw a human detective, and other than the de facto sherlock, this is pretty much the first thing I thought of (well, okay, bloodhounds were first, and I adore bloodhounds to pieces, but their ears just aren’t as dramatic as a basset hound’s), and since I love dogs, I figured I’d go this route.

Blicksmas is Now!!

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

I got a little splurgey the other day and so yesterday (we were out of town overnight, so today is Blicksmas-observed, I guess) arrived my new Holbein water-miscible oil paints (I don’t have a very good setup to use real oils, especially with the kid) and watercolor pencils of two kinds (Inktense and Prismacolors.) So, uh, expect to see some stuff in those mediums as soon as I have some time…

(Blicksmas is, of course, the day the big box arrives from Dick Blick. Blicksmas! In my house it happens roughly every three to six months.)

crazy neat stuff

Friday, April 16th, 2010

From NYC artist Emily Miranda. I don’t wear hardly any jewelry (and what I do wear never comes off – wedding ring mainly), but this stuff is very cool. (via Craftzine) Reminds me a bit of the caddis fly guy.

Teapot Song Card

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I’m still really struggling with this style, or at least several facets of it. I really, really, really like the pencil sketch, particularly the original (I’ve redrawn it a number of times now, both in pencil and digitally, trying to recapture the initial sketch’s feel – and failed), but I’m not going crazy for the painted versions. This is the best, though it’s not completely finished. I think I may be overdoing it, which I am very wont to do. Blicksmas is this Saturday and some watercolor pencils are coming – I may try another version with those.

another quickie

40 handy points of advice from Bill Griffith (creator of Zippy the Pinhead.) Zippy has become more of a struggle for me to read over the years than it once was, but his points are excellent regardless of one’s feelings about Zippy.

Live Gamut Masking

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

James Gurney put forth this great concept called “gamut masking” for color selection a while back, and Richard Robinson built a Flash application to do it digitally! Nice!

best photoshop brushes I’ve found yet

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Mark Molnar has a great blog and one the single best photoshop brush sets I’ve ever seen. It’s worth the download just for the one called “Hard Round 19 pixels,” which is by a long shot the best pen-esque sketch brush I’ve used. Lots of great scumble-style brushes too. Between Molnar’s brushes and Chris Oatley’s (which are primarily in the form of Tool Presets), I’m feeling much better about the possibilities with digital than I had previously.

daily sketch: ceiling girl!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

She’s called ceiling girl because we have popcorn ceilings, and before my son would go to sleep on his own I would wind up staring at the ceiling while he fell asleep for his nap. Eventually several characters popped out, and she’s one of them. I haven’t gotten her a body yet – this was me trying to be a bit speedy for once, and working on improving my digital work. This is all photoshop, for once.
