I’m trying to learn as much as I can about illustration and its associated arts and techniques. Mostly by the skin of my teeth and with very little time on any given day.

I’ll be using this as a forum to explore my personal style(s) and whatever it is I’m trying to figure out at any given point in time – which could be anything within the very wide field of illustrative arts – and to collect and share the resources I come across.

Some posts will be works and works-in-progress, others will be links and resource descriptions. I have even less time to do this than I have to do anything else, so there is no set posting schedule or guarantee. I am hoping to collect and collate here as much as possible, since I might as well do it publicly as not.

The elephant up above is in Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors on, um, I think Strathmore cold press watercolor paper. I like the watercolors all right; they’re kind of cheapies but I keep most of my supplies extremely portable these days since my time to work is also my only time to sit on the couch with my husband, so I do virtually all of my non-digital work there. I also have (and love) Dr. PH Martin’s watercolors, two big sets totalling 24, but they’re a much bigger pain to drag out and use.

The type is DIN, one of my favorites. The little elephant-looking dingbat is sketched in Scribbles, vectored out in Illustrator, and shaded with the basic airbrush tool in Photoshop. You probably don’t care about all that much detail, but I’m trying to make a general practice of disclosing all of this stuff as often and as specifically as possible, so you’ll just have to skip over the parts that bore you.

I love your shrimp sketch (http://educatingkatie.com/tag/shrimp/). Can I get your permission to use it for a project I am working on? I can give you more information via email.
